Textiles of
Threads of Tradition
Documentation of Coastal Saurashtra’s handwoven textiles
The tapestry of culture and craft from the lands of Gujarat is seen through the art of weaving in this project. This journey unveils the breathtaking textiles handwoven by the skilled weavers of this vibrant state. From intricate patterns that whisper ancient stories to vibrant hues that mirror the region's soul, these textiles carry with them the legacy of generations past.
Travelling along the coast of Saurashtra for 8 days, we met a handful of dedicated weavers who were still passionately practising the art of handloom weaving. Sadly, the tradition of handloom textiles is gradually fading away with each passing day. It was a stroke of luck that we had the opportunity to witness these skilled weavers in action, creating these remarkable textiles. Unlike the neighbouring region of Kutchchh, this belt seems to be neglected, hence we are witnessing a process of decline.
Witnessing these incredible hand-woven textiles being entirely disregarded and underappreciated is truly disheartening. Only a handful of skilled weavers manage to sustain themselves by relying on support from the local communities who still value their craftsmanship. Unfortunately, the younger generation shows little interest in continuing the weaving tradition, as they perceive no promising prospects for financial stability or recognition in this field of work. The art of hand-weaving demands immense labour, dedication, and expertise to produce high-quality textiles, making it a challenging and skilful endeavour.
These textiles are rich with intricate borders and motifs, and they are primarily crafted as clothing to drape the body in different ways; or presented as religious offerings to the goddesses. Many of these woven textiles cater to the needs of nomadic communities seeking warmth in colder climates. Additionally, there are numerous ornamental and decorative ways used to create clothing items like shawls and scarves, especially for special occasions such as weddings.
Many of these designs have been passed on by generations to these weavers, drawing inspiration from the abundant nature surrounding them. Among the patterns, you can find many geometrical designs and borders, crafted through a mathematically planned system of warps and wefts. Traditional motifs, like leaves, trees, peacocks, and camels, continue to be timeless favourites. However, more recent creations now incorporate modern elements like street electrical poles and rockets. The weavers demonstrate exceptional skill in their craft, and they express their creativity whenever the opportunity arises.
There is an urgent need to take up steps to revive this craft and preserve the traditionally significant textiles from this region. Most of the weavers practising now are the last of their weaving generations. The newer generation who is adept in weaving is looking for other work outside this field for currently available better opportunities.
Right market, growing opportunities and designers’ interventions are crucial steps in this endeavour. These measures will not only preserve the craft but also provide encouragement and instil pride in the work of both existing and new weavers. By taking these proactive measures, we can ensure that this cultural treasure continues to thrive for generations to come.
