Discovering Ceramics: A Journey of Celebrating Indian Aesthetics
Designed for IkaiAsai, this tableware set was briefed to channel the meditative energy of the pure in physical objects, to evoke a mood of calmness. Here is my journey of creating the collection under Dharmesh Jadeja and Rakhee Kane and explore the world of ceramics and design.
The journey
This project presented itself as a unique opportunity, opening a new doorway for me into the world of ceramics.
Although I initially saw myself as a mere observer, I found myself assisting Dharmesh Jadeja and Rakhee Kane with their years of experience, and learning more than I had anticipated.
Although I never really touched the clay, I came to understand the beauty of ceramics, delving into the technicalities of the process and gaining a keen design sense while creating tableware. Working alongside pioneers in the field of art, I found myself extremely lucky to witness their creative processes firsthand.
As I helped them create a stunning collection, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for this experience. It was truly a journey of observing and learning and one that has left me with a newfound appreciation for the world of ceramics.
The process of creating this collection was a journey of exploring traditional Indian aesthetics in a modern context. The idea was to take the essence from the long established ‘barni’, ‘kansa’, and ‘longpi pottery’, and create a set of tableware for the emergent.
We began the journey by designing and sampling pieces at Aavartan pottery studio. As we moved forward, we involved local potters in the production process, working together to create a collection that celebrates the richness of Indian art and culture.
